^^
Alice's career in scholarly communications, publishing, and research infrastructures has been long and distinguished, and continues to go from strength to strength. From running her own marketing agency, to a series of increasingly senior positions at Blackwell, Wiley, ORCID, and the National Information Standards Organizations (NISO), Alice has built a reputation as a strategic thinker, whose high level of emotional intelligence enables her to bring mutual understanding to disparate communities. During her tenure at ORCID, as Director of Communications and of Community Engagement, she built up an extended global team of dedicated staff to support ORCID’s highly diverse community of researchers and member organisations. Her focus on creating consensus and understanding across different groups of research stakeholders resulted in greatly increased adoption and a much better understanding of the vast potential of ORCID and other persistent identifiers. As NISO’s Director of Community Engagement, Alice more than doubled membership through the development of consortial agreements, as well as helping the organisation develop and implement its first diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy.
^^
Having worked on a part-time basis since co-founding MoreBrains, Alice joined us full-time in 2023. Her wisdom and vision help our clients to identify and grasp strategic opportunities and goals, her research skills help shape our project designs, and her strong communication skills ensure that our outputs combine insight with clarity. Alice exhibits a consistent and unique blend of professionalism and personal warmth, energising collaborations and creating an environment where questions are explored, partnerships thrive, and projects are optimally developed and delivered.
^^
As well as being the 2022-23 Past President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), Alice is also a Scholarly Kitchen chef. She has written and presented widely on topics such as open research, trust, peer review, and DEIA; is a member of the DataCite Community Engagement Steering Group and the SSP DEIA Committee; and played a key role in both originating and organising community events including Peer Review Week and PIDapalooza. Given her legendary ability to ‘get things done’, she has more than earned her status as an organisational and community leader. It is unsurprising to everyone (except possibly Alice!) that her contributions to our communities have been recognised with various honours, including the SSP Distinguished Service Award (2018), the ALPSP Award for Contribution to Scholarly Publishing (2016), and the ISMTE Recognition Award (2013).</Description></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Person"><Name>Josh Brown</Name><Description>Co-founder for Research and Strategy
^^
As MoreBrain's lead on strategy and research, Josh is uniquely well-placed to draw on his decade-and-a-half experience of leadership in open research infrastructures, programme management, and community of practice development. He brings deep knowledge of the global research ecosystem, along with many strong and positive relationships worldwide -- including with institutions, funders, publishers, infrastructure providers, and more.
^^
After qualifying and working as a librarian at the University of Brighton, Josh moved into open research infrastructures. In 2010 he joined Jisc, to shape their investments and innovation programme for improving research information management in the UK. He then brought those programme management and coalition-building skills to CERN, where he helped lead the SCOAP3 initiative, successfully coordinating a global network of libraries, consortia, funding bodies, and publishers to redirect funds formerly used to pay for journal subscriptions to pay for open access publishing in high-energy physics.
^^
From 2014 - 2019, Josh worked at ORCID, where he combined the strong relationship-building and negotiating skills he developed at Jisc and CERN with his passion for supporting open research. As lead for ORCID-EU -- supporting ORCID’s participation in the EC-funded project THOR (Technical and Human infrastructure for Open Research) -- he was instrumental in helping build capacity for and adoption of persistent identifiers (PIDs) in Europe. After being promoted to Director of Partnerships, with a global remit, he brought together funders from around the world to reach consensus on the use of persistent identifiers in funding workflows.
^^
Since leaving ORCID, Josh has continued to explore the challenges and opportunities of advancing and opening up research, working in partnership with funders, libraries, research institutions, policy-makers, and research infrastructure providers in dozens of countries on six continents (seven if you count Zealandia/Te Riu-a-Māui). He has used his deep and broad experience in research information, open research, scholarly communications, community-building, organisational strategy, and research policy to support numerous initiatives, non-profits, and businesses.
^^
Josh's expertise in strategy and research, together with his skills in developing robust frameworks and approaches to challenges such as governance and sustainability, can help your organisation achieve its potential.</Description></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Person"><Name>Phill Jones</Name><Description>Co-founder for Digital and Technology

^^
Fiona is the MoreBrains Partnership and Community Development expert. With 20 years of experience in publishing and scholarly communications, Fiona has an unparalleled understanding of the models, strategies, workflows, and potential synergies that make up the global research information ecosystem. With expertise in social science methods, community management, strategic analysis and an exhaustive knowledge of all aspects of the business and practice of scholarly publishing, Fiona has an unparalleled knack for locating the best pathway to a solution. With her insight, extensive network of contacts, and skill in energising collaborations, Fiona is perfectly placed to set those solutions in motion.
^^
After completing a DPhil in English at Oxford University, Fiona began her publishing career with Wiley as a production coordinator. After a stint at Random House Australia as an Editorial Coordinator and then in London as Senior Commissioning Editor at Bloomsbury Academic, Fiona returned to Wiley as a Publisher in Earth Sciences. In these roles, Fiona developed deep expertise in publishing operations across editorial, production, commissioning, market strategy, portfolio development, and many other areas. Importantly, Fiona's work as a publisher was trans-disciplinary -- across the humanities and the social, physical, and natural sciences. She led forward-looking projects that involved newly-emerging trends like open and linked data, open access, cross-stakeholder collaborations, and challenge-oriented research (for example environmental science and climate change).
^^
It was these experiences, working at the cutting edge of scholarly communications innovation, that inspired Fiona to move into independent research, both as an associate fellow at the University of Reading, and a consultant. Initially with Maverick Publishing Specialists, and later as founder and director of Murphy Mitchell Consulting, Fiona built a reputation as an expert in the use of data-driven decision-making and scholarly infrastructure. She worked with a wide range of organisations including the Belmont Forum, FORCE11, Sloan Foundation, Bodleian Library, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Jisc, and the Institute of Physics creating understanding and driving alliances between funders, researchers, institutions, and publishers.
^^
Fiona continues to be a leader in research infrastructure, and particularly open data, including in her role as deputy chair of the Dryad Board, working closely with the Executive Director and other Board members to define Dryad’s future direction and strategy. She’s a founder member of the STM Research Data Group, a member of the Research Data Alliance and FORCE11, and the Researcher to Reader Advisory Board. With a holistic understanding of ‘how things work', Fiona is a keen industry watcher with a sharp eye for the points of intersection that others often miss. When there's a need to develop a functional coalition to affect change internally or between organisations, Fiona is our go-to person to figure out how all those sometimes seemingly disparate pieces will fit together to create something truly innovative.</Description></Stakeholder></Organization><Vision><Description>Empowering research organizations through collaborative consulting and open research values.</Description><Identifier>_e8df6ef8-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier></Vision><Mission><Description>To provide consulting services that enhance strategic planning, research policy, and infrastructure for diverse organizations in the research ecosystem.</Description><Identifier>_e8df704c-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier></Mission><Value><Name>Scholarship</Name><Description>Commitment to transparency, accessibility, and collaboration in scholarly communications.</Description></Value><Value><Name>Communication</Name><Description/></Value><Value><Name>Transparency</Name><Description/></Value><Value><Name>Accessibility</Name><Description/></Value><Value><Name>Collaboration</Name><Description>Encouraging contributions from a wide range of stakeholders in research and scholarly communications.</Description></Value><Goal><Name>Consulting Services</Name><Description>Providing tailored consulting services to support research policy, infrastructure, and strategy.</Description><Identifier>_e8df70ba-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator/><Stakeholder><Name>Research Organizations</Name><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/><Objective><Name>Programmes</Name><Description>Evaluate research programs to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.</Description><Identifier>_e8df7218-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator>1</SequenceIndicator><Stakeholder><Name/><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/></Objective><Objective><Name>Markets</Name><Description>Conduct research to understand market trends and inform strategic decisions.</Description><Identifier>_e8df72d6-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator>2</SequenceIndicator><Stakeholder><Name/><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/></Objective><Objective><Name>Analysis &amp; Insights</Name><Description>Assess the research ecosystem to provide insights on challenges and opportunities.</Description><Identifier>_e8df73e4-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator>3</SequenceIndicator><Stakeholder><Name/><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/></Objective><Objective><Name>Business Models</Name><Description>Helping organizations develop sustainable business models.</Description><Identifier>_e8df743e-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator>4</SequenceIndicator><Stakeholder><Name/><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/></Objective><Objective><Name>Engagement Strategies</Name><Description>Develop strategies for effective stakeholder engagement.</Description><Identifier>_e8df74e8-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator>5</SequenceIndicator><Stakeholder><Name/><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/></Objective><Objective><Name>Outreach Implementation</Name><Description>Supporting organizations in executing their outreach strategies.</Description><Identifier>_e8df7560-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator>6</SequenceIndicator><Stakeholder><Name/><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/></Objective><Objective><Name>Growth &amp; Development</Name><Description>Advise startups on strategic growth and development.</Description><Identifier>_e8df75e2-ff57-11ef-8a8e-1d63ff82ea00</Identifier><SequenceIndicator>7</SequenceIndicator><Stakeholder><Name>Startups</Name><Description/></Stakeholder><OtherInformation/></Objective></Goal></StrategicPlanCore><AdministrativeInformation><StartDate/><EndDate/><PublicationDate>2025-03-12</PublicationDate><Source>https://morebrains.coop</Source><Submitter><GivenName>Owen</GivenName><Surname>Ambur</Surname><PhoneNumber/><EmailAddress>Owen.Ambur@verizon.net</EmailAddress></Submitter></AdministrativeInformation></PerformancePlanOrReport>
